What is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter Syndrome affects many girls and women because of the negative messages they hear from society starting in childhood. These messages include:
- Boys are good at math, girls are better at reading and crafts.
- Being pretty is more important than being smart.
- Being different is dangerous.
- People prefer girls who are quiet, helpful, thin, etc.
- Women should be caregivers.
- Girls are too emotional to be leaders.
- Let someone smarter or stronger do that for you.
Even though we know these messages aren't true, they stick with us and often show up later in life. When they do, women tend to stay quiet, avoid conflict and attention.
They don’t ask for promotions, nor expect a raise. They put the needs of others first, even at the expense of their own health. They keep their dreams hidden and often feel silly about wanting more.
By avoiding to being different, they stay in unhappy jobs and relationships and settle for less. It's crucial to challenge and change these ingrained habits.
Recognizing and addressing the impact of these societal messages is the first step toward empowering women to believe in their capabilities and to pursue their true aspirations without doubt or restraint.
It's time we discard these outdated notions and foster an environment where all individuals feel valued and capable, regardless of gender.
